Shahbaz Sharif said at an event in the capital Islamabad, "The term of our government will end tomorrow (August 9). I will submit a petition to the President to dissolve the National Assembly. Later, an interim government will take over."

Earlier, Shahbaz Sharif mentioned that the National Assembly will be dissolved three days before the scheduled time. Following the constitutional requirement, a general election will be held within the next 90 days.

Yesterday, Leader of Opposition in Pakistan's National Assembly Raja Riaz said he has not yet discussed with Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif who will lead the interim government. He further said, I hope that a final decision can be reached in the meeting on August 9.

According to the Constitution of Pakistan, a general election must be held within 90 days if the National Assembly is dissolved before the end of its term. A general election must be held within 60 days after the National Assembly completes its term.

After winning Pakistan's general elections in 2018, Imran Khan and his coalition government began their journey on August 12. However, in April of the following year, the opposition gained strength in the National Assembly elections, weakening Imran Khan's government. Later, the opposition party formed a coalition government under the leadership of Shahbaz Sharif.

Since then, Imran Khan has faced various legal battles. Recently, the Election Commission of Pakistan disqualified him from re-election for five years after the expiry of his current term. The decision came after Imran Khan was fined Rs 1 lakh for accepting foreign funds in the Tuskhana case. He was arrested from his residence in Lahore on the same day and sent to Attock Jail in Punjab.
